I’m a mom, a friend, a partner and a semi retired educator. I’ve always been a lifelong learner, and I believe that it’s never too late to start something new. That’s how I found myself writing rom-coms in my fifties.
These days, I still work in schools on occasion replacing teachers, vice-principals and principals. My new passion, though, is writing romantic comedies about real people navigating messy lives, unexpected love, and everything in between.
Last spring, I read Story of My Life by Lucy Score, about a rom-com author dealing with a broken heart and writer’s block. As the main character begins to get her life and writing back on track, she starts thinking in terms of story: rich characters, story structure, and what comes next.
When I finished Lucy Score’s book, I had a simple thought: I could write one of these books...right?
I struggled with the genre at first. I was a bit embarrassed to be writing comedy when the world was in crisis. It seemed like such a frivolous way to spend my time. Then it occurred to me that the world needs more laughter and love, and maybe, that’s how I can contribute.
I opened a blank document, made a loose outline, and started writing. What started as a “why not” quickly turned into something new. I couldn’t put it down. I was laughing out loud to myself. My son could hear me giggling through the bedroom wall but I hadn’t told him what I was doing yet. It wasn’t until I was about about halfway through my first book, One List at a Time, that I started telling people.
